This exhibition poster features one of the German-British artist Walter Richard Sickert's paintings of music halls, in this case Gatti's Hungerford Palace of Varieties in 1888. On stage is the popular singer Katie Lawrence, whom Sickert drew over a hundred sketches of as well as a number of paintings over a twenty year period.
Sickert is an interesting and important figure in British art. Born in Munich, he emigrated to Britain and became an actor first before studying art. He worked as Whistler's engraving assistant and developed his own style, beginning in standard academic mode before absorbing influences from Impressionism and Post-Impressionism after becoming friends with Degas in Paris. He was a prominent figure in the Camden Town Group of painters who all were interested in a more continental and modern style of painting.
His great fascination was with ordinary people and ordinary life in the early years of the 20th century, and his portraits and other paintings feature popular personalities and nights out at the music halls as well as people going about their humdrum lives in humdrum homes.
