Willi Baumeister (1889–1955) was a pivotal figure in European modernism, bridging the pre-war avant-garde with the revival of German abstraction after 1945. Rejecting German Expressionism for Constructivism and Purism, he gained prominence in the 1920s as an innovative typographer and for his 'Mauerbilder' (wall pictures), geometric reliefs integrating painting and architecture.

Dismissed from his Frankfurt professorship by the Nazi regime in 1933 as 'degenerate', Baumeister retreated into 'inner emigration'. During this period, his style shifted towards biomorphic abstraction inspired by prehistoric art and archaic glyphs. Post-war, his influential treatise 'The Unknown in Art' (1947) and bold, ideographic late works (notably the Aru series, one of which appears in our exhibition poster here) cemented his reputation as the elder statesman of West German abstraction.
