Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl (1861–62) is one of the most important paintings of Whistler's early career. The model is Joanna Hiffernan, his lover and most constant sitter of the 1860s, shown full-length in a white cambric dress against a white curtain, holding a white lily, standing on a wolfskin rug. It is a painting almost entirely composed in a single colour, and it was the work that first made Whistler's reputation — not in London, but in Paris.
Rejected by the Royal Academy in 1862 and then by the Paris Salon the following year, it was eventually shown at the 1863 Salon des Refusés, the famous counter-exhibition where Manet's Déjeuner sur l'herbe also caused a scandal. The painting was originally called The White Girl; Whistler only renamed it Symphony in White later, adopting the musical vocabulary that would define his Nocturnes, Arrangements and Harmonies. This is where that vocabulary begins.
