In this poster we've imagined what an exhibition dedicated to Virginia Woolf and her connections with the visual arts might have been like, and how it would have been advertised if it was staged in a commercial gallery in Paris in 1990. Our research on such posters from the time (collected in part first-hand on gallery-trawling trips back then) informed our design.
Virginia Woolf of course had plentiful connections to the art world. Her sister Vanessa Bell was an artist who illustrated Woolf's book jackets. She was part of the Bloomsbury Group of writers and artists. And she was great friends with Roger Fry, founder of the Omega Workshops and a key figure in bringing modern continental (especially French) art to the attention of British artists and thinkers. So there were a lot of exciting art things going on that Virginia Woolf was right in the middle of.
