Interior, Strandgade 30 (1901) shows a sparse Copenhagen room: bare floorboards, white-painted doors, muted grey walls, and the artist’s wife Ida, often turned away from us. It is one of the defining images of Vilhelm Hammershøi, the Danish painter who became known across Europe as the master of silence and light.

From 1898 to 1909 Hammershøi lived at Strandgade 30, a seventeenth-century merchant’s house in the Christianshavn district, and he painted the rooms of that single flat around sixty times — close to half of everything he produced in those years. He treated the apartment as a stage set. Photographs of the real home show it cluttered; he would move furniture and objects around to compose the picture he wanted, paint the arrangement, then put everything back. Door handles vanish, corners empty out, anything anecdotal is removed. What remains is light falling across a floor and the particular quiet of an inhabited but motionless space.

His restraint had clear ancestors. Hammershøi admired Vermeer’s domestic interiors and Whistler’s tonal economy, and like both he understood that a near-empty room can hold more feeling than a crowded one. Contemporary critics found his palette of greys, whites and browns almost monochrome, yet conservators cleaning one of the Strandgade interiors identified more than forty distinct whites in a single canvas.

Our poster imagines an early-1980s exhibition at an upmarket London gallery, a period when northern European painting was drawing fresh attention from British curators. The typography is deliberately spare, holding back so that the stillness of the image sets the tone. It sits naturally alongside our Whistler posters, with which it shares a sensibility.
