This striking poster of a lion by the illustrator Tom Purvis was designed to boost morale in Britain during World War II. The lion has long been used as a symbol of British determination, strength and resilience. Purvis drew several posters in the same patriotic vein, though he's perhaps best known for his railway posters. These tend to use flatter areas of colour, whereas here in this poster his chalk and gouache modelling create a very sculptural effect with the body of the lion. The combination of this and the intense background colour make this a very strong poster indeed!
