This exhibition poster features a 1966 photograph of three models posing in front of a Piet Mondrian painting wearing the 'Mondrian' dresses the French fashion design legend Yves Saint-Laurent introduced in his Autumn-Winter collection of 1965.
The dresses were remarkable for their simplicity and modernity, which was achieved through a careful construction process. Each dress was made from blocks of wool jersey, sewn together in a way that concealed the seams, allowing the garment to appear as though it was a single, continuous piece of fabric, much like Mondrian's paintings. The black grid lines are also a key structural feature, giving the dresses a modernist, graphic feel.
This specific fusion of fashion and fine art helped to bring fashion to a serious level in the cultural conversation, showcasing that it could be a medium for intellectual and artistic exploration, just like painting or sculpture.
