This poster carries one of Paul Cézanne's late watercolour still lifes: a blue glass bottle, a lidded sugar bowl, and apples set out on a tabletop, painted around 1900 to 1902. It is laid out for a French gallery setting, the artist's surname in heavy red capitals below the image and the gallery's details in restrained blue type above.

Watercolour counted for more in Cézanne's final years than the medium's reputation as a sketching tool would suggest. He worked in overlapping patches of translucent colour, setting cool blues beside warm ochres and letting the white of the paper carry the light. Objects are described by these floating planes rather than by contour, so the bottle and fruit appear to assemble themselves from colour as you look. The same method ran through his late oils and handed Picasso and Braque a way of breaking form into structured planes.

Cézanne was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839 and spent his last decades there, returning repeatedly to a few local subjects: the Mont Sainte-Victoire, the grounds of the family house at the Jas de Bouffan, and the still lifes he arranged in the studio. By 1900 he had moved well past the Impressionist circle he once exhibited with, and younger painters were treating him as essential. He died in 1906. The watercolour shown here belongs to the Belvedere in Vienna, which dates it to 1900 to 1902.

Our poster places the work in an imagined August 1974 exhibition at the Galerie Juliette Fabiaud in Montpellier, a small Languedoc dealer with a quiet programme of Post-Impressionist and early modern art.

This is an APA original, a designed object rather than a reproduction of a poster that ever existed, printed as a museum-quality giclée on 300gsm archival paper.
