Oskar Schlemmer’s ‘Spiral’ costume sketch for Das triadische Ballett (c.1938) demonstrates the Bauhaus theatre’s investigation of the body as a geometric instrument. The drawing operates simultaneously as figure study and construction diagram, with numbered elements identifying skirt, spiral apparatus, headdress, velvet waist, cuffs and tights.
Developed from a ballet first conceived in 1922, the ‘Spiral’ figure reduces the dancer to rotating discs and cylindrical volumes. The annotated dressing sequence and performance note reveal Schlemmer’s attention to spatial effect and controlled movement.
