Ophelia lies on the water with her eyes closed, the blue of her cloak cutting a hard band through a landscape that has otherwise dissolved into haze. Odilon Redon painted this scene between 1900 and 1905 in oil on paper, working the surface with pastel and chalk until the boundary between the figure and the water around her stopped being clear.

Redon was born in Bordeaux in 1840 and spent the first half of his working life almost entirely in black: the charcoal drawings and lithographs he called his noirs, made under the influence of the printmaker Rodolphe Bresdin. Colour arrived late. From the 1890s he worked mainly in pastel and oil, and after 1900 he produced no more noirs at all. This painting belongs to that final phase, when he was in his sixties and handling literary and mythological subjects as fields of colour rather than as staged narrative.

Ophelia drowns offstage in Hamlet, present only in Gertrude's account of the broken willow branch. Delacroix found the pictorial possibilities in that speech in 1838, and the Pre-Raphaelites turned the floating figure among river flowers into one of the most repeated images in nineteenth-century British painting. Redon instead focuses on the blue cloak and the blossoms suspended in a wash of colour.
