Blauer Vogel (1922) is one of Kurt Schwitters' Merz collages, the body of work for which he is best known and which he produced almost continuously from 1918 until his death in 1948. The composition is built from the kind of materials Schwitters collected daily on the streets of Hanover: tram tickets, postage stamps, printed scraps, advertising fragments, beer labels and torn ration coupons, arranged into a tightly held abstract structure with bold typographic emphasis.
Schwitters invented the word “Merz” in 1919, taking it from a fragment of the German word Kommerz that appeared in one of the first collages he made. The term came to describe not just the collages but his whole creative practice — drama, sound poetry, magazine publishing, architectural assemblage. The collected ephemera carried specific weight: post-war Germany was hyperinflating, materially exhausted, and Schwitters' choice to elevate its discarded printed matter into compositional art was a position taken against the cultural pieties of the established avant-garde. The Berlin Dada group had refused him membership, so he founded his own variant from Hanover.
The Merz collages directly anticipated the visual language of mid-century European graphic design — the assemblage of type, found imagery, and bold rectangular masses became foundational for designers from Theo van Doesburg through to Wim Crouwel. Schwitters' own commercial typography of the 1920s, including the design of the Merz journal, sits within the same vocabulary.
