Southend – Sunset (1892–94) is a late watercolour by James McNeill Whistler, made at the Thames estuary on the low Essex coast. A flat horizon divides the sheet into two near-equal bands of warm pink sky and pale blue-grey water, with a single schooner and a few scattered figures marked in the briefest strokes. The whole image is held together by restraint: a narrow palette, a small handful of marks, and a huge amount of left-alone paper.

By the 1890s Whistler had mastered a watercolour language that was both Japanese in its economy and entirely his own. After forty years of painting the Thames, he had learned how little he could put down and still make a picture work. The Southend watercolours are among the quietest things he ever produced.

Our poster presents the painting as a vintage gallery exhibition print, with period-accurate typography and the restrained institutional voice typical of British gallery announcements from the era.
