Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket (c.1875) is James McNeill Whistler's most famous painting, and the most consequential one of his career. It shows the night sky above Cremorne Gardens, the pleasure resort at the western end of Chelsea, at the moment a firework bursts over the crowd. The figures are barely legible. The whole image dissolves into tone.
When the painting was exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877, the critic John Ruskin accused Whistler of "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face". Whistler sued for libel and won — but was awarded damages of one farthing and no costs, and the legal bills bankrupted him. The trial made him one of the most famous artists in the English-speaking world and is now widely seen as the first time an English court was asked to adjudicate the central argument of modern art: what a painting is actually for.
Our poster presents the work as the centrepiece of a vintage gallery exhibition, designed with period-appropriate typography.
