This is a print of the American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler's famous painting 'Nocturne in Black and Gold - The Falling Rocket' depicting a fireworks display over the River Thames in London.

Painted around 1875, it became famous three years later when the art critic John Ruskin took Whistler to court over it, accusing him of "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face"! Ruskin lost the case, and although Whistler's court costs bankrupted him the publicity the case caused meant that this painting became one of the most celebrated of its era - and made Whistler one of the best-known artists in the world!
