Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) was a Finnish painter whose career began with well-received academic paintings of classic subjects, before becoming more homely and intimate. Then from the mid-1910s her work evolved into a radically simplified and extremely sophisticated style that was all her own. Though perhaps best known now for her portraits, especially self-portraits, her still-life paintings from this period are just as important. The painting in this poster, Camellias from 1934, shows an artist whose isolation and solitude enabled her to create paintings of great beauty and intensity.
