Pale tree trunks cross a clearing built from small flecks of green, yellow and ochre. Georges Seurat's The Forest at Pontaubert, painted in oil in 1881, is a sous-bois: a view from inside the wood, closed in by foliage.

Seurat was twenty-one when he spent two months of 1881 at Pontaubert, a Burgundy village once frequented by Corot and Daubigny. He probably finished the canvas that winter in the studio he shared with his travelling companion, the painter Edmond Aman-Jean. Its close greens and upright trunks anticipate the settings of Bathers at Asnières and A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. The painting is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
