Georges Seurat is best known as an Impressionist painter who developed the technique known as Pointillism, where tiny dots or dabs of paint mix optically when the viewer is far enough away to form the image of the painting. But Seurat also developed a form of this technique in his drawings too. Using conté crayon on paper with a rough surface he built up his drawings gradually, with the tiny peaks in the weave of the paper acting as the dots, catching the dark crayon and slowly forming an image. The technique allowed him to create dramatic lighting effects, as in his 1882 drawing The Black Bow seen on this poster.
