Frida Kahlo painted Self-Portrait with Monkey in 1938, setting her own steady gaze against a wall of dense green foliage, a spider monkey at her shoulder. This poster places that painting at the centre of a spare, contemporary exhibition design.

The work was commissioned by A. Conger Goodyear, then president of the Museum of Modern Art, after he saw Kahlo's first solo exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York in November 1938. Worked in oil on masonite at just 40 by 30 centimetres, it is one of the many self-portraits Kahlo made for friends and patrons. The animal is one of the spider monkeys she kept at the Casa Azul in Coyoacán, resting here as a close, watchful companion.

The original hangs at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York. Kahlo returned to the monkey across her career, and this 1938 version is among the most direct: frontal and composed, the face held level with the viewer.

Our poster imagines a brief June 2024 showing at Lomellini, a Portofino gallery that deals privately and by appointment. The Italian text and the restraint of the layout, a wide white field with classical serif capitals and the painting given room to hold the page, borrow the visual language of the quiet private view, where a few rare works are shown without fanfare.
