Flaming June is Sir Frederic Leighton's most famous painting. Samuel Courtauld, the founder of the Courtauld Institute, said it was "the most wonderful painting in existence," and with its hot oranges and molten golds summoning an intense warm summertime feeling it's easy to see why. Intriguingly, soon after it was painted in 1895 it disappeared from view and only resurfaced in the 1960s, when it was put up for sale for a mere £100 (roughly £2500 in today's money)!
