Flowers of the Riverside is a 1920 colour lithograph by Edward McKnight Kauffer, depicting a dense riverside scene - waterlilies, yellow flag irises, and broad-leaved aquatic plants rendered in flat colour planes - above lines from Percy Bysshe Shelley's The Question (1820), set in the designer's own hand-painted typography.

Kauffer (1890-1954) was an American artist and graphic designer who lived for much of his life in the United Kingdom, working primarily in poster art while also active as a painter, book illustrator, and theatre designer. The outbreak of World War I drove him from Paris to England, where he was impressed by the Vorticists and would live for the next twenty-five years, helping to shape not only the nascent art of advertising but also the visual consciousness of British daily life.

The poster sits at the intersection of several visual traditions Kauffer was navigating simultaneously: the botanical precisionism of Arts and Crafts illustration, the ornamental flatness of Japanese woodcut prints, and the simplified geometry of early European modernism. It predates his more overtly Cubist and Futurist work of the mid-1920s, retaining an Art Nouveau lyricism while already moving towards the clean graphic economy that would define his mature style.

This is a high-quality reproduction print of an original public domain work, produced as part of Art Poster Archive's series of historically significant poster design.
