E. McKnight Kauffer's poster for the 1939 London Music Festival, built around a monumental letter f in red-orange and yellow that supplies the initial of 'festival' across a black banner.

Kauffer (1890-1954) was born in Great Falls, Montana, and settled in London in 1914, where over the following twenty-five years he became the most celebrated poster designer in Britain. He absorbed Cubism and Vorticism early, and translated their fractured geometry into commercial art of unusual ambition, producing landmark designs for clients including Shell and the Daily Herald.

The festival ran from 23 April to 28 May 1939 under the patronage of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Its centrepiece was Arturo Toscanini conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a complete Beethoven symphony cycle at Queen's Hall. It was the last London Music Festival: war was declared that September, Kauffer returned to New York in 1940, and Queen's Hall was destroyed by incendiary bombs in 1941.

The original lithograph is held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.
