Our poster featuring Claude Monet's work in Venice captures a particularly enchanting phase of his artistic output. He travelled to Venice only once, in October 1908, at the age of 68, after being persuaded by his wife Alice and their friend Mary Hunter. They stayed for about ten weeks, a period during which Monet was initially hesitant to paint, overwhelmed by the beauty of the city and the challenge of doing it justice in his work. However, once he began, he produced a series of paintings that are among his most admired today.

During his stay, Monet created approximately 37 paintings of Venice. These works focus on capturing the effects of light and reflection on the water, something that aligns well with his impressionist techniques. Monet's Venetian scenes often feature iconic landmarks such as the Palazzo Dario, the Grand Canal, and the Santa Maria della Salute, but they are imbued with a sense of atmospheric and fleeting impressions rather than detailed architectural studies.

The paintings from his Venice series are noted for their ethereal quality and subtle colour palette, capturing the unique luminosity and transient moments of Venice. They mark an important moment in Monet's late work, showcasing his enduring interest in light and atmosphere. These works were not shown immediately after his return to France; they were first exhibited by the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in Paris in May 1912, where they were met with considerable acclaim.
