The painting seen in this Claude Monet exhibition poster, Boulevard des Capucines, is one of two that he painted from the same viewpoint (his friend the celebrated photographer Nadar's apartment). It was painted in 1873, before Monet painted his famous Impression, Sunrise, but it is believed that both that and Boulevard des Capucines were shown together at the first exhibition of the Société anonyme des artistes peintres, sculpteurs et graveurs (which he had set up with Renoir, Pissarro and Sisley) that led to the coining of the term 'Impressionism'. So in effect this painting comes from an absolutely crucial point in Monet's career.
