Chaïm Soutine was a Belarussian artist who spent most of his working life in France. From very early on he developed a highly original style of painting and drawing, taking inspiration from Impressionism and Expressionism as well as the Old Masters, that is uniquely fluid and alive.

He frequently painted portraits of waiting & cooking staff from various restaurants, hotels and other up-market establishments in Paris and beyond in the 1920s and 1930s, and this exhibition poster features a great example of one of those works.
