This poster is a vibrant example of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project during the Great Depression. Reflecting the prevailing Art Deco style with its streamlined geometric forms and a strong colour scheme, the poster promotes a "Field Day" event by the WPA's Recreation Project District No. 2. The central athletic figure with a tennis racket, surrounded by silhouetted sporting activities, captures the era's focus on movement and progress.
Such posters were not only utilitarian, aimed at drawing public interest to community events, but they also stand as a testament to the role of the WPA in supporting American artists and enriching public life through art. Today, these pieces are celebrated as iconic artefacts of American art and social history from the 1930s.
(Please note: because it was originally printed almost 100 years ago our print does contain some of the original minor printing flaws. We chose to keep these in as they add to the vintage character of the piece).
