This wonderful period poster from 1914 was produced to advertise the bus service to Box Hill in Surrey in the UK, a wonderfully picturesque location that affords the visitor spectacular views of the towns and countryside below for miles (we know, we visit it regularly and it's one of our favourite places!).

The person who produced it, Paul Rieth, was a German artist who produced a handful of posters for this client around this time. His work shows the distinct influence of Plakatstil, the more streamlined and simplified style of graphic design that emerged in the early 20th century as a reaction to Jugendstil (essentially the German version of Art Nouveau).

The fantastically bold areas of flat colour and sans-serif typography in this poster mark it out as a prime example of Plakatstil, and as such would be a great addition to the walls of anyone who loves and is inspired by vintage posters.
