William Glackens (1870-1938) was an American painter and co-founder of the Ashcan School movement. The Impressionists were an important influence on his work after he spent a year painting in Paris in his mid-twenties. He is best known for his colourful depictions of urban life and for his role in promoting modern art in the United States.
