Five-Way Portrait of Marcel Duchamp was made on 21 June 1917 at the Broadway Photo Shop in New York. The hinged-mirror setup — five vantage points captured in a single exposure — was a popular commercial novelty of the period, found at photography studios and amusement parks across the United States. Duchamp sat for the postcard the same year he made Fountain, and the two works share a single proposition: the artist's role is selection, not manufacture.

The mechanical operator who exposed the negative was anonymous and uncredited — exactly the conditions Duchamp wanted. By incorporating the resulting photograph into his serious body of work, Duchamp transformed a piece of commercial holiday ephemera into a meditation on the instability of the self. The portrait sits among the earliest examples of his sustained interest in identity as performative and multiple, an interest that would culminate in his female alter ego Rrose Sélavy from 1921 onwards.

The original portrait was printed on standard postcard stock measuring roughly 5 × 3 inches. When enlarged to poster scale, the image retains the characteristic grain of an early twentieth-century gelatin silver postcard print — the texture of its commercial origin rather than of a studio artwork, and the quality that drew Duchamp to it.
